CHIJMES

SCROLL DOWN

CHIJMES

CHIJMES, now a major venue for retail, food and beverage and entertainment in Singapore, was originally known as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) Convent, a premier girls’ school established in 1854 by an order of French Catholic nuns.

The history of CHIJMES dates back to 1854, Mother Raclot and three companions travelled to Singapore from Penang on a mission to build a school for girls. They commenced lessons in the Caldwell House bought by Father Beurel ten days after moving in. It soon expanded to house additional buildings along all nine lots of land from Victoria Road to North Bridge Road acquired by Father Beurel.  An orphanage and a refuge for women was also built.

CHIJMES is a building complex most famously represented by Caldwell house that was built in 1840 and a chapel that was built in 1904. Both buildings were gazetted as national monuments on the 26th of October 1990.

CHIJMES won a Merit Award in the UNSECO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2002.
