Former National Stadium

SCROLL DOWN

Former National Stadium

The 55,000-capacity National Stadium at Kallang was opened in July 1973 in response to a call for more emphasis on sports and fitness in Singapore. Although intended mainly for sports events, it was also the venue for many cultural, entertainment and national events. Muhammad Ali even had a five-round exhibition bout at the National Stadium.

Financed by proceeds from Singapore Pools, a national lottery company set up in 1968 to fund the construction of the stadium, the Former National Stadium was built to promote sports in Singapore and also improve the nation’s standing in international sports.

Many Singaporeans hold very fond memories of the various events held at the stadium. The stadium was the venue for 18 National Day Parades and 3 Southeast Asian games and has also played host to famous football clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Arsenal.

Some of the greatest memories of the Former National Stadium would during the days of the Malaysia Cup, a competition the national team won three times in 1977, 1980 and 1994. The stadium would be packed to capacity with supporters.

The Former National Stadium was torn down in 2010 and a new Singapore Sports Hub now stands in its place. Remnants of the Former National Stadium are currently housed in the new Singapore Sports Museum.
